The Teacher . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John Carmody, The Progressive Pilgrim

"The ‘techne,’ the art, of good teaching…assumes that one understands something worth communicating, so its focus is the examples, images, mental diagrams that will help the other to grasp this understanding for him or herself.

Granted a little of this gift, the teacher comes to realize that the major ally is imagination. If one can cast what one wants to vividly, it is liable to stick."

Secret of Learning . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fr. Leonard Vickers, OSB

"Learning is a search for truth. Learning isn’t finding the answers to everything in life. The great secret of learning is knowing we’ll never understand everything.

Learning is deepening our understanding of what life is all about. Your faith is deepened through knowledge."

The One Weakness . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Napoleon Hill, Think & Grow Rich, p. 90

"There is one weakness in people for which there is no remedy. It is the universal weakness of lack of ambition."

Don’t Wait for… . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Wheeler Williams

"Don’t wait for the inspired moments, work every day or you may miss them. Little by little you may find that your best work in a sense creates itself, your hands functioning almost without conscious control. You may come to wonder how much is really yours and how much mysteriously is part of some universal force."

Act of Sharing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Edward Chinn

"The word ‘companion’ is a monument to the high value placed on the act of sharing a meal together. The word ‘companion’ comes from two Latin words: com (together) and panis (bread). In a literal sense, companions are persons who have eaten bread together. How deep is our human need for companionship."

True Happiness . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Lin Yutang

"So much unhappiness, it seems to me, is due to nerves; and bad nerves are the result of having nothing to do, or doing a thing badly, unsuccessfully or incompetently. Of all the unhappy people in the world, the unhappiest are those who have not found something they want to do. True happiness comes to him who does his work well, followed by a relaxing and refreshing period of rest. True happiness comes from the right amount of work for the day."

If We Did… . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Thomas A. Edison

"If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves."

Wisdom Seeds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

"Be like the birds we humans love to hear…
Begin your day with songs of hope and cheer."

"Practice the art of gratitude,
the habit of thanksgiving, and
the attitude of appreciation."

Words Have Power . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Daily Word, Oct., `90

"It is important for us to be conscious of the words we speak in even the most casual conversation, for words have formative power to create blessings in any situation. Our words can be powerful affirmations that help bring God’s good into manifestation in our lives. The words we speak affect not only our own lives, but the lives of everyone who hears them as well."

Don’t Mistake… . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jim Rohn

"Don’t mistake movement for achievement.
It’s easy to get faked out by being busy.
The question is: Busy doing what?"

A Way of Living . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ernest Kurtz, The Spirituality of Imperfection, p. 46

"If spirituality begins as a cry for help, it becomes a way of living with—of putting up with—our human imperfection. The saints and sages insist that imperfections be accepted as imperfections because such acceptance is necessary if we are to develop a vision of life and a way of living in which those imperfections can be endured and lived with creatively. And so the ‘second step’ along that way involves accepting the uncertainties of life, refraining from asking for absolute assurances, and abandoning demands for perfection."

Thanksgiving Prayer . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers

"Almighty God,
to you belongs the sea, for you made it,
and the dry land shaped by your hand.

We hold the riches of the Universe only in trust.
Make us honest stewards of your creation,
careful of the good earth you have given us,
compassionate and just in sharing its bounty
with the whole human family."

PS. 24: "The earth is the Lord's"

Value of Discretion . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . R. Whitson Seaman, Pulpit Helps, Dec. 2000, p. 16

"Once you learn the value of discretion, how you wish you had learned it sooner."

Conscious Choice . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Top Performance, Vol, 2, # 1

"Dr. Norman Vincent Peale…compared the process of developing negative thoughts to birds flying over our heads. He explained, ‘We can’t prevent them from flying overhead, but we can prevent them from building a nest in our hair.’

…We all have the power to make a conscious choice as to what kinds of thoughts we want to keep and allow to expand in our minds."

Count Your Blessings . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Zig Ziglar

"Count your blessings and resolve to be grateful for what you have rather than disgruntled by what you don’t have. Then take steps to use what you have to the best of your ability!"

Prayer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Christopher News Notes, Nov. `87

"As the Christ life grows in you, you will want to share it; so let your light shine.…There’s a natural and a supernatural way of looking at every situation. You give witness when you allude to God’s loving Presence."

Work at Your Game . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Deacon "Easy Ed" Macauley, former NBA basketball player

"Just remember, that if you’re not working at your game to the utmost of your ability, there will be someone out there somewhere with equal ability who will be working to the utmost of his ability. And one day you’ll play each other, and he will have the advantage."

Lure of the Crowd . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Source Unknown

Some time ago a scientific magazine published an article concerning a certain species of alligator. Being lazy beasts, they seldom hunt for their dinner but just wait for their victims to come down to them. They lie near the bank with open mouths, acting as if they are dead. Soon flies begin to settle on their moist tongues, and several other insects gather. This crowd attracts bigger game. A lizard will crawl up to the alligator to feed on the bugs; then a frog joins the party. Presently a large crowd of critters are gathered; then there is a sudden ‘earthquake’—WHAM!—huge jaws come together and the party is over!

Remember: don’t be lured to follow large groups.

Toy’s Globe Lesson . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Source Unknown

A father brought home a children’s toy globe of the earth for his young son. The boy was fascinated by it and spent the entire evening excitedly talking to his father about continents and oceans, the North Pole/South Pole, and all the rest. When it was bedtime, and as the youngster was settling under the covers, the father picked up the globe and began tip-toeing out of the bedroom. The little boy, not quite asleep, saw what was happening and whispered to his father, "What are you going to do with my world?"

The unspoken question from every child to each one of us is: "What are you going to do with my world?"
