Curiosity & Determination . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous, Bits & Pieces, Vol. 22, # 1, p. 13

"If I could have only two qualities on which to judge a person’s promise, I would choose curiosity and determination. Only the curious will learn, and only the resolute overcome the obstacles to learning. Curiosity and determination—these I regard as more important than a person’s I.Q."

Up Words . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

"Enthusiasm is the match that lights the candle of achievement."

"In the face of unjust criticism we can become bitter or better; upset or understanding; hostile or humble; furious or forgiving."

Divine Sense of Mirth . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Henry Ward Beecher, ENDURING WISDOM

"Life is full of amusement to an amusing man. Happy is he who has this faculty. It is more blessed than a garment in cold weather. There is nothing that so covers the nerves, there is nothing that so tempers anger and passion, there is nothing that is such a natural cure for discontent, there is nothing that brings men to such a companionable level, and creates such fellowship, as the divine sense of mirth."

A Mediocre Person . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Somerset Maugham

"Only a mediocre person is always at his best."

The Aladdin Factor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jack Canfield & Mark V. Hansen

"Five Barriers To Asking Questions:

    4. Low Self-Esteem. …Most of us feel unworthy of love, happiness and fulfillment and inadequate to create the kind of life we want. We suffer from inferiority complexes, neurotic guilt and a lack of self-confidence.
‘I believe the fear of unworthiness is the greatest obstacle that prevents people from asking for what they want. When I know I’m worthy, it’s easy to ask.’ Diane Loomans."

Learn…Relearn . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alvin Toffler

"The illiterate of the future are not those who are unable to read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn."

Surprised by Light . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ulrich Schaffer

"He creates the yearning in you that at times seems too much to bear.
He allows you to think Paradise even though you cannot enter it yet.
He lets you to become restless so that you will start wandering again through the thousand thoughts of the world."

Experience of Joy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alan Paton, Instrument of Thy Peace

"When we give ourselves, not seeking gratitude, we are often overwhelmed by the response in some other person who at that moment gives himself to us. It is in that moment that God is; it is in that place that God is. That above all, is what we receive and it is an experience of joy. And that for me is one of the meanings of God, that He is in that time and place where you and I give of ourselves to each other.

What does giving oneself to God mean? Whatever else it means, it certainly means giving oneself to others."

On Ambition . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

"When we are so dominated by personal ambition that we fail to recognize the equally justified ambitions of others, we lose our perspective. If our ambition is greater than our ability, we will also be victims of constant tension and frustration."

Succeed Always . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rev. Robert Schuller,

"Win or Lose, But Succeed Always," Possibilities, Jan. ‘85

"The dreamer is a winner. The daring-to-try person is a winner. The starter is a winner. The planner is also a winner. If you have succeeded at devising a plan you can never be regarded as a total loser.…

Let’s examine a portion of a verse from Hebrews: (12:1) ‘Let us strip off and lay aside everything that holds us back.’ That includes fear of failure, indecision, confusion, etc. It is impossible to be a total failure if you will dream, if you will dare, if you will decide, if you will get started, and if you will have faith."

Rejoice in that day and leap for joy.

Your Best Talents . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Horizons, Farmers’ Almanac, 1989

"Success is discovering your best talents and skills and applying them where they will make the most effective contribution."

21st Century Challenges . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jim Rohn, JimRohn.com

"Leadership is the great challenge of the 21st century in science, politics, education, and industry. But the greatest challenge in leadership is parenting. We need to do more than just get our enterprises ready for the challenges of the 21st century. We also need to get our children ready for the challenges of the 21st century."

On Wisdom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pres. Herbert Hoover

"Wisdom consists not so much in knowing what to do in the ultimate as in knowing what to do next."

Law of the Harvest . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Earl Nightingale, Insight, Jan. ‘87, p. 26

"The great majority of people grossly underestimate their capacity to think and to act and to determine and shape their futures. It’s sad, but it seems that even in this day and age, you still find most people believing their lives are shaped and determined for them by chance—by fate and circumstance. They are people who still have not learned the age-old wisdom that everything in our lives is governed by law and not by luck, and that we get back the harvest that we ourselves have sown."

Daily Prayer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR

In the springtime of your journey of faith."

Rejoice with dawning sun

Wisdom of Leaving Out . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Christophers,

Best of Three Minutes A Day, Vol. 26, Dec. 22

The famed architect-designer, Stanford White, once shocked an editor by the high price he charged for a magazine cover design.

Although he had spent much thought in preparing the design, its classic simplicity caused his customer to wonder at the bill of $500—a goodly sum at the turn of the 1900s.

"I’d say that was a pretty steep price for such a plain design," said the editor.

"The price," explained White, "was for knowing what to leave out."

The wisdom to know what to leave out of our own lives is something worth striving for.

A Glimpse of Eternity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I.L. Peretz (adapted)

There’s an old legend that tells of a renowned abbot who disappeared from the monastery for a few hours each Sunday. His mysterious conduct was the topic of much speculation among the abbot’s novices. Many of them suspected that their esteemed mentor had discovered a secret meeting place with the Almighty because he returned radiating such serenity.

Consequently, one Sunday they drew straws for which one of them would secretly follow their teacher. The designated novice watched in amazement as the great abbot put on a coarse cloak of a beggar. Then he followed the abbot through the city’s back streets and saw him enter a humble shack.

The novice peered through a window and watched in wonder as his spiritual guide tended to the needs of an elderly man—changing his clothes, cleaning the room, preparing him a meal.

When he had seen enough, the novice returned to the monastery where the others eagerly shouted questions: "What happened? Did he meet the Almighty? Ascend into heaven?" The young novice told them, "Yes he did, all of that, and if not even higher!"

In witnessing the abbot’s holiness through his compassion and works of mercy, the young novice had witnessed a glimpse of eternity.
