New Year Page . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Edith Lovejoy Pierce

    "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day."

Best Thinking . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Thomas Edison

"The best thinking has been done in solitude. The worst has been done in turmoil."

World Day of Peace . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . St. Pope John Paul II, 2004

    "The Church…has always taught and continues today to teach a very simple axiom: peace is possible. Indeed, the Church does not tire of repeating that peace is a duty. It must be built on the four pillars A New Year Blessingindicated by St. John XXIII in his Encyclical Pacem in Terris: truth, justice, love and freedom. A duty is thus imposed upon all those who love peace: that of teaching these ideals to new generations, in order to prepare a better future for all mankind.

    [F]or the establishment of true peace in the world, justice must find its fulfillment in charity. …Justice and love sometimes appear to be opposing forces. In fact they are but two faces of a single reality, two dimensions of human life needing to be mutually integrated.…

    For this reason I have often reminded Christians and all persons of good will that forgiveness is needed for solving the problems of individuals and peoples. There is no peace without forgiveness!"

To Be Understood . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Madame Curie

"Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood."

More in Us . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kurt Hahn

    "There is more in us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps, for the rest of our lives, we will be unwilling to settle for less."

Form Good habits Og Mandino, The Greatest Salesman in the World

    "Scroll 1: In truth, the only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedes all others is – ‘I will form good habits and become their slaves.’"

Attitude Toward Work . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . William Arthur Ward

    "Our attitude toward work can make it a burden or a blessing, a grind or a game, an aggravation or an adventure."

Respect for Law . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

    "I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law."

A Leader . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John Quincy Adams

    "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."

Law of Increase . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Earl Nightingale

    "How much does it cost to give love, respect and consideration to those near you? Very little – just a little extra effort. Yet love, respect and consideration are priceless to the person receiving them. This is the key: Give more than you receive in everything you do. In this way, you are building a great credit for yourself that must come to you in some form, sooner or later. You are taking out less than you are putting in, and by so doing you are building a tidal wave of future prosperity. This is the law of increase."

Qualities of Humor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Christophers, #28

I made a New Year's resolution broccoli. If I can't stand it, I'll give it up for Lent."Because of its joyful, liberating qualities humor can:

• free us to pursue our goals and fulfill our mission;
• enhance health;
• mend a broken spirit;
• lighten a heavy heart;
• ease tension in social and professional situations;
• get the job done faster;
• tap the deepest emotions within us."

Leaders . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bennis & Nanus, p. 21

    "There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important. ‘To manage’ means ‘to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge of or responsibility for, to conduct.’ ‘Leading’ is ‘influencing, guiding in direction, course, action, opinion.’ The distinction is crucial. Managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing. The difference may be summarized as activities of vision and judgment – effectiveness, versus activities of mastering routines – efficiency."

African Proverb

"Not to know is bad;
not to wish to know is worse."

Mere Act of Seeing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Helen Keller

    "I walk with people whose eyes are full of light but who see nothing in the sea or the sky.… It is far better to sail forever in the light of blindness…than to be content with the mere act of seeing."

He Most Lives… . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Philip James Bailey

Welcome 2017 fireworks

"We live in deeds, not years; in thoughts not breaths;
In feelings, not in figures on a dial.
We should count time by heart-throbs.
He most lives who thinks most, feels the noblest, acts the best."

Loose Screw . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sam Levinson

"The first screw to get loose in your head is the one that holds the tongue in place."

Recipe for a Happy New Year . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anonymous

    Take twelve fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor and hate, cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the past – have them fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time. Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot this way) but prepare one day at a time.

    Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), hope, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dressing – don’t do it), prayer, meditation, and one well-selected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor.

Kill ‘Em with Kindness . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Zig Ziglar

    During the days of the Berlin Wall some East Berliners decided they were going to send their West Berlin adversaries a little "gift." They loaded up a dump truck with all sorts of garbage, broken bricks, old tires, building materials, and any-thing else of zero value. They drove the truck across the border, gained clearance, and dumped it all on the West Berlin side.

    Needless to say, the West Berliners were incensed and were going to "get even" with them. Fortunately, a very wise man intervened giving entirely different counsel. As a result, they responded by loading a dump truck with bags of food (scarce in East Berlin), clothing (also scarce), medical supplies (even more scarce), and a host of other essential items. They drove the truck across the border, carefully unloaded it all, and left a sign that read neatly: "Each gives according to one’s ability to give."
